FOUR East Lothian golf courses – including the host of this year’s Women’s Open – have been named in the top 100 courses in Great Britain and Ireland.

Courses the length and breadth of the country have been scored out of 100 by Today’s Golfer.

The scoring is broken down into six criteria – design (40), setting (15), memorability (15), playability (10), consistency (10) and presentation (10).

The Renaissance Club, which will host the Genesis Scottish Open for the fourth consecutive year in July, was rated 95th.

The Tom Doak course is described as “a fine modern links” and scores a total of 76.

Nearby Gullane (No 1) is ranked 65th and scores a total of 78.

The publication notes: “Expect some fine views and consistency, as well as a beautifully conditioned course – exactly how a links should be presented.”

Ranked second in East Lothian and 10th on the list is North Berwick.

The course is described as featuring “memorable hole after memorable hole” and “a must play” as it achieves a score of 85.

However, top of the list for East Lothian – and fifth overall – is Muirfield, which hosts the Women’s Open for the first time in August.

Also scoring 85, Muirfield is described as “an awesome test in any weather, a trial of strategy, ball-striking and nous”.

St Andrews (old) takes the top spot on the list.

The list also includes a number of county golf clubs which are ranked from 200 to 101.

Archerfield (Fidra) is ranked 138, while Kilspindie is 136 and Gullane No 2 is 135.

Nearby Luffness is ranked at 132 and, further along the coast, Dunbar comes in at 124 on the list.
