TURKEY with all the trimmings was delivered to a deserving Tranent family by a kind-hearted butcher.

Colleen Fleming and her family were presented with the special Christmas lunch – as well as gifts – by Steven and Yvonne McMaster.

S & Y McMaster Master Butchers, based on High Street, wanted to reward the family after Colleen’s son Codi spent four weeks in hospital and underwent life-saving operations in 2020.

Initially, doctors thought Codi had gastroenteritis but he started hallucinating and was taken into hospital. Later, they found it was a brain infection caused by a dental abscess and sinus infection.

He had to learn how to use his right arm again – but still managed to ensure fellow children in Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children had a festive period to remember by donating selection boxes and gifts to them.

Covid restrictions at the time meant that Codi, now in S1 at Ross High School, was only able to see his mum and dad, Steven, and not his sister Shannon or brothers Leon and Jaycob for several weeks.

Colleen was “shocked” when she found out she was receiving the Christmas lunch of turkey, Brussels sprouts, carrots and potatoes, prawns for a prawn cocktail, and a chocolate gateau.

A voucher from Smyths Toys Superstore was also included, alongside a festive hamper with treats from a number of local businesses.

The mum said: “It was really nice, I’m not going to lie.”

Yvonne and Steven McMaster opened their butcher’s shop on Tranent High Street in August last year, and Yvonne said: “We’ve been delighted by the way we’ve been supported by the community since we launched our business, and we simply wanted to thank the community by giving something back.”

That saw them team up with Radio Saltire, also based in the town, to find a deserving family. They were so touched by some of the stories that they ended up providing a festive lunch for five other families as well.
