AN “AWE-INSPIRING” trek through the desert has raised more than £1,500 for a cancer charity.

Bronwyn Brodie battled temperatures of 25˚C and soft sand as she walked 100 kilometres through Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, in aid of Maggie’s.

Bronwyn, who works with youngsters with additional support needs at Musselburgh Grammar School, jetted from Heathrow to Jordan at the end of November.

A dozen walkers were joined by a leader while they made their way through the desert with just a backpack containing food, water, a first aid kit and other essentials.

The grandmother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, was blown away with the experience and hopes her final fundraising figure could break through £2,000.

She said: “We were all fundraising for Maggie’s and raising awareness for Maggie’s.

“Most of us, well, some of us, had been through cancer personally and some had been touched by cancer through a very close family member.

“That was the whole reason we were doing that trek – to get people from just anywhere would not have necessarily worked but to have that common goal, the common reason, for doing something, be it for Maggie’s or any other charity.

“I’m really passionate about Maggie’s and I am just glad to be able to do it, to complete it, and thoroughly enjoy it!”

Meals were prepared for the fundraisers, as they had their breakfast before setting off early to ensure they reached the next camp by 4pm, as it got dark.

Bronwyn struggled to put the experience into words and described the walk, which saw participants from across Britain taking part, as “absolutely fantastic”.

The fundraiser had been more than a year in the planning, with the dozen walkers originally supposed to be trekking through the Sahara in 2020. However, coronavirus restrictions saw the fundraiser shelved before it was switched to Jordan.

For Bronwyn, a grandmother of 11 from Dunbar, it was more than worth the wait.

She said: “I have done a lot of things but nothing quite like that. It certainly was awe-inspiring.”

And Bronwyn said of Maggie’s: “They are just such a wonderful place and the feeling you get when you go in is like in a sanctuary.”
