SAINT Nick was in bad nick when he tried to get treatment at the Edington Hospital, so goes a sad Christmas tale told to the Courier by campaigners fighting for the hospital’s reopening.

Santa had been visiting North Berwick before the big day but injured his ankle, we’re told, on a seaweed-slick stone while combing the rockpools.

He hobbled up to the Edington in the hope he would be seen but, much to his surprise, the door was locked.

A spokesperson for the Hands Around the Edington campaign said: “We are gobsmacked to learn that not only did Santa pay a visit to North Berwick before his big night, but that he hurt himself while he was here.

"Had the minor injuries unit at the Edington been open, he would have been in and out in a flash without anyone being any the wiser.

"We hope his injury isn’t serious enough to prevent him from delivering presents to all the boys and girls around the world on Christmas Eve.”

A letter was delivered to Santa by the campaigners which read: “All the people of East Lothian want this Christmas is for the Edington to be reopened.”
