AN 86-YEAR-OLD man from Tranent with advanced cancer has defied the odds to make an “amazing recovery” following 10 days in hospital with pneumonia – and a local tradesman has offered a helping hand by gifting him a mobility scooter.

Andrew Dodds, of Fleets Road, collapsed on October 26 at his home and was rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where his family were delivered the news that he might not make it through the night.

Mr Dodds was told by doctors that he had pneumonia, a lung infection, bowel infection and other infections in his stomach.

However, 10 days later, the former Midlothian taxi driver grew stronger and made a miracle recovery. He was discharged from hospital to return home.

He was then cared for at home by his daughters, wife, nurses and doctors.

Pauline Dodds, his daughter, said: “It is absolutely amazing that he pulled through after all that.

“The doctors didn’t think he would be able to make it through but he did and it has been amazing that he is OK and getting back on his feet with a few small steps.”

Following the news that Mr Dodds had been discharged from hospital, a Good Samaritan got in touch with the family to donate an electric buggy scooter to him.

Jamie Gilhooley, who lives in Tranent, donated the buggy to help Mr Dodds travel around the town when he is feeling better.
