THE A1 is closed to all traffic between Haddington and Dunbar and is closed to high-sided vehicles elsewhere in East Lothian as Storm Arwen batters the county.

The Met Office has issued its most serious red 'take action' warning covering the period between 3pm today and 2am tomorrow (Saturday), as it warns of a potential danger to life due to extremely strong winds.

The A1 is now closed in both directions between Abbotsview Junction, Haddington, and Thistly Cross Roundabout, near West Barns.

BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland's operating company responsible for the A1, had earlier said that if the winds were as strong as forecast, it would bring in a full closure of the A1 in all affected areas.

A diversion route is in place via the A199. This is expected to add approximately 10 minutes to affected journeys.

Traffic Scotland is also warning of a detached road sign near Bankton Junction obstructing traffic heading westbound near Tranent.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s network manager for south-east Scotland, said: “This section of the A1 includes an exposed bridge over the River Tyne, so with gusts up to 84mph forecast this evening, we’ve closed it to all traffic for safety, in line with the bridge’s wind management plan.”

At 2.40pm, BEAR Scotland announced that the A1 had been closed to high-sided vehicles, with wind speeds of up to 52mph recorded near Torness.

Drivers of high-sided vehicles, motorbikes, caravans and cars with trailers or roof boxes should divert via the A68.

Mr Deans said: “We’ve now closed the A1 to high-sided vehicles for safety, with winds gusting over 50mph.

“All road users are advised to take care and check for restrictions before travel.

"If we experience the very high wind speeds that are forecast later today, this will result in a full closure of the A1.

“Please check Traffic Scotland for the latest travel advice before setting off and consider whether your journey is essential.”

Police have said people should not drive "under any circumstances" while the red warning is in place.

With sleet and snow forecast on higher routes, BEAR Scotland will have 26 gritters treating trunk roads in south-east Scotland this evening and a further 13 on patrol overnight. Patrols will also monitor the Queensferry Crossing for ice.
