On Friday, I boarded the 14.41 train to North Berwick from Edinburgh, little knowing that an adventure would unfold.

The train did not actually leave Waverley Station until just after 3pm, the delay apparently caused by an incident on an earlier train which involved a member of our train crew helping the emergency services at the station.

As our train moved away, it went slowly and then stopped to allow the London train to pass.

When we reached Drem, it drew to a halt and an announcement told us that it was cancelled.

The next train would be at 16.05.

So, we all disembarked and wondered what to do.

Then, a bright, resilient young lady came to speak to our little group, offering a lift in a large taxi she had already booked!

We were a total of eight people and quickly bonded together in the comfort of the taxi, offering onward lifts from our station to one another.

It was extremely kind of our new friend to bring us all to North Berwick and we felt very grateful; but at first she would not accept donations towards the cost, then said that the money we pressed in her hand would all go to the RNLI!

The whole experience was an example of community care and goodwill in an emergency, one good turn leading on to another.

It was most heartening and I would like your readers to know about it.
