A DEDICATED grandmother dressed up as Peppa Pig for a dip alongside a gaggle of ‘witches’ in the cold waters of North Berwick’s West Bay on Saturday to raise funds for her granddaughter’s fight against neuroblastoma.

Margaret Kent, grandmother of three-year-old Flora Gentleman, dressed up as her granddaughter’s favourite cartoon character for a swim in the Forth, in conjunction with the Wicked Witches of North Berwick’s fundraiser for Flora’s Fight Against Neuroblastoma and North Berwick RNLI.

Delighted parents Stephanie Kent and Jamie Gentleman attended the fundraising afternoon with their daughter, who was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma in April.

The couple were “over the moon” when Flora was able to come home to Aberlady last month, after isolating with her for one month in a hospital room following a stem cell transplant and chemotherapy at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh.

Flora will now visit hospital as a daycare patient three times a week for blood tests, IV medication and transfusions until she undergoes radiotherapy this month.

She will have a scan at the end of this month and meetings with the radiotherapy team in preparation for the treatment.

Stephanie and Jamie said: “The event was a great success; we had a good turnout and the witches were brilliant!

“Luckily the weather stayed dry and there were some great costumes by those who attended.

“So far there’s been just over £1,000 raised for Flora’s campaign; we have more donations coming in daily!

“Flora loved playing on the paddleboard so I think we’ll have to get the witches to take her out some time.

“We’re super proud of Flora’s granny for swimming alongside the witches dressed as Peppa Pig.

“She took up wild swimming shortly after Flora’s diagnosis and it was nice to see her getting involved on Saturday.”

Margaret, who lives in Dirleton, said: “It was a wonderful day in aid of Flora’s Fight Against Neuroblastoma and the RNLI.

“A huge thank you to the Wicked Witches of North Berwick for their amazing event. It was a joy to watch.”

The witches – Ruth Fraser and Emma Papakyriakou – added: “Thank you for the generosity shown on the beach on Saturday and showing your support.

“If we have put a smile on your faces please, please donate.”

The Gentleman family are continuing to fundraise for treatment for Flora and are hoping to raise between £250,000 and £350,000.

Flora’s fundraising page has topped £77,000 since its launch in May; now her parents are urging the community to get involved with donations, sponsored sporting events and bake sales.

The final total raised for Flora and the RNLI will be announced by the team on the Wicked Witches of North Berwick Facebook page on Friday. To donate to Flora’s fight, visit solvingkidscancer.org.uk/Appeal/flora and to donate to NB RNLI visit gofund.me/37363ad1
