A lecturer from Queen Margaret University (QMU) at Musselburgh has walked over hot coals in aid of a charity which helps people with long-term health conditions.

Keen rower Mhairi Sumner, 59, from Portobello, was one of a group of brave supporters and staff from Scottish charity Thistle who took on the firewalk challenge on October 10.

Founded in 1944 to provide support for disabled ex-servicemen returning from World War II, Edinburgh-based Thistle continues to offer a dedicated veterans’ support service.

Also taking part in the venture were a forces veteran carrying a stretcher with his son, a burlesque dancer, and three personal assistants who support people living with disabilities.

They were all given training for the firewalk, which took place at the Thistle Centre for Wellbeing in Craigmillar, Edinburgh.

Ever since she was young, Mhairi preferred to be barefoot at any opportunity. Whilst other rowers don neoprene boots and dry socks to keep their toes warm and dry, she prefers to row barefoot. She is programme leader in events management at QMU and a member of Row Porty.

Mhairi, who has raised £295 so far, said beforehand: “I love a challenge and I will be putting my tootsies to the test by walking on fire for an amazing charity. Thistle is local to me and I want to support the fantastic work they do by raising as much as I can.”

Gail Begg, Thistle corporate and community partnerships lead, commented: “We’re thrilled to have the support of our wonderful fundraisers taking part in the firewalk for Thistle.

“It’s a fantastic challenge and a great event to create some drama and excitement as the nights begin to draw in.

“Their efforts will raise much needed funds for Thistle, ensuring support is available for people living with long-term health conditions so that a health crisis doesn’t become a life crisis.”
