TRANENT Juniors reached the third round of the Scottish Cup after continuing their exceptional record against Lowland League teams with another famous cup win on Saturday.

The Belters were 2-0 winners in Alloa against Broomhill, the third Lowland League club they have knocked out of the Scottish Cup in the last two seasons, after wins over Edinburgh University and East Stirlingshire last season. Shaun Rutherford and Ben Miller were the Tranent goalscorers this time.

Also in the draw for the third round for the first time will be Dunbar United, though the Seasiders still have work to do to ensure they will progress in the competition, after a last-minute Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale equaliser at New Countess Park made the final score 1-1 cancelling out Jamie Devlin’s 71st-minute strike and meaning the two sides will lock horns again next weekend in Edinburgh for a third-round spot.

Also in Scottish Cup action were Haddington Athletic and Preston Athletic but both made their exits from the competition, despite excellent efforts.

Haddington too suffered last-minute heartache away at former SPFL club Brechin City, now of the Highland League, with a Hi Hi own goal in the final moments giving the hosts a 2-1 win after Haddington had led at half-time through a Guy McGarry strike to allow them to dream of what would have been a famous upset.

Meanwhile, Preston had to play most of their tie with 10 men after a first-half red card but made former Junior giants Auchinleck Talbot fight all the way, keeping the score at 0-0 until the final few minutes of the match, when two late goals for the West of Scotland League side saw them run out 2-0 winners at the Pennypit to progress.

The draw for the third round takes place at 5.15pm on Sunday, with the clubs from the Scottish Championship and Scottish League One entering the competition at that stage, meaning Tranent and Dunbar could potentially be drawn against clubs such as Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Kilmarnock and Hamilton Academical.

Away from the Scottish Cup, Musselburgh Athletic and Ormiston were both also in knockout action on Saturday.

Musselburgh defeated Kennoway Star Hearts 2-0 at Olivebank in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup third round but Ormiston lost in the first round of the King Cup, St Andrews United 3-2 winners at Recreation Park.
