THE owner of the Mercat Grill in Whitecraig is hoping to get the go-ahead to site a food trailer in the car park at his premises.

Graham Blaikie said it was hoped to have the new facility, which would offer takeaways, deliveries and alfresco eating, in place for three years.

A planning application for the food trailer has been lodged with East Lothian Council.

Mr Blaikie said that the Mercat Grill on Whitecraig Road now opened Thursday to Sunday due to a lack of staff.

The food trailer, he said, would be open for business seven days a week, offering breakfasts and other food which would not necessarily be on the menu at the Mercat Grill.

He explained that he hoped the food trailer would have a pizza oven.

He said: “For example, we have Sky Sports so customers might enjoy watching that while eating a pizza in our outdoor marquee.”

Mr Blaikie said the food trailer would take pressure off the kitchen at the Mercat Grill, adding: “There is a lot of pressure on the kitchen when we do open.

“People have rescheduled visits to come along when we are open.”

The Mercat Grill is hosting a whisky tasting lunch at 1pm on Tuesday, with a special guest from Lindores Abbey Distillery in Fife, which classes itself as the “spiritual home of Scotch whisky”.

Murray Stevenson, the distillery’s brand ambassador, will outline the history of Lindores Abbey, at Lindores in Fife, which has widely recognised links to the earliest written reference to Scotch whisky.

Its whisky has been revived after 523 years and the spirit is back flowing from its copper stills.
