SCARECROWS are set to dress up and line the streets for a special Hallowe’en-themed trail around Tranent later this month.

Evelyn Stevenson, an NHS worker at East Lothian Community Hospital, has teamed up with her friend Carolyn Clark to organise the community event – the first of its kind.

Evelyn worked as a support practitioner with ELCAP for 13 years before taking on a role at the hospital in April.

The duo took inspiration from the villages of Dirleton and Gifford, both of which boast impressive annual scarecrow displays.

Evelyn and Carolyn are asking residents and shop owners to consider creating their own spooky scarecrow to be displayed outside their homes or in shop windows around the town.

Judging will take place on October 28 and there will be a selection of prizes on offer for the best house scarecrow and best shop window.

Evelyn, a youth worker at the Pennypit Special Needs Club, said: “A couple of shops have entered so far.

“Veermans Pets & Co have actually donated a £20 voucher towards a prize but we’ve also got a few trophies and gift vouchers for prizes.

“We have around 10 people doing it at the moment, but lots more are showing interest.

“I’ve been round Dirleton and Gifford’s scarecrow trails and we loved the idea and wanted to replicate it here.

“We thought about doing it last year but decided to go for it this year and make it Hallowe’en themed. Hopefully next year it will be bigger and better.”

A map of the scarecrow trail will be released later in the month once all the scarecrows and their displays have been confirmed.
