NEW life has been breathed into an iconic red phone box at the heart of a village.

Dirleton residents came together last month to celebrate its conversion.

Anne Orr told how the phone box, off the village’s Manse Road, had been restored and converted to contain a book exchange, heritage information panels, an artwork frieze and children’s artwork.

Beth Willis (of Bakes by Beth) handed out biscuits in the shape of the telephone box.

Bill Nimmo, who built the new interior, described how the history had been researched and the triptych inside created, following the designs of local exhibition designer John Finlay.

Sonia Bruce talked about her work with the primary school children, and how future activities for the children would be run from the box. Valerie Nimmo then explained how the book exchange was to operate, before Diana Murray conducted the formal opening.

She congratulated the Dirleton Box team for saving the iconic telephone box.

She thanked those individuals who had contributed to the project and also North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership, Gullane Area Community Council, Dirleton Village Association and Dirleton Good Neighbours.
