PLAYERS and members of Tranent Juniors Football Club are hoping to don their boots later this year in a charity match to raise money in memory of a much-missed local man.

Daniel McFarlane died on June 1 after he came into contact with an overhead power line when extending new window cleaning equipment at his home on the outskirts of Haddington.

The 36-year-old is survived by his wife of seven years Ria and their one-year-old daughter Frankie.

Two days after Daniel’s death, a fundraising page was set up by DJ Davie Martin, community stalwart and avid fundraiser, to help Daniel’s family, with more than £28,000 raised to date.

A £1,000 donation was made by Tranent Juniors, one of the clubs Daniel played for as a youngster.

Now, the club is hoping to hold a friendly against another of Daniel’s former teams, Hibernian FC. Planning for the event is at an early stage.

The club is waiting until Covid restrictions ease further before discussions fully begin, secretary Paul Macgregor said.

It is hoped that some of Daniel’s friends and family might be able play in the match.

Mr Macgregor added: “We are a community club and like to do the best we can to help people and help those in our community. Anything we can do, we try to do.

“Daniel has always been there and been around the club, he’s played with some of the people here.

“But we want to help at the right time and raise some money for his family.

“It will also help bring the community together.”

He added that it had been “hard to believe it happened” when Daniel was fatally injured.

As well as Hibernian Youth and Tranent Juniors, Daniel also played for Pencaitland Amateur Football Club and Tranent AFC, with a minute’s silence and minute’s applause held for him before their match a few days after his death.
