A POPULAR mobile Mexican food van is saying adios to Port Seton as retrospective planning permission for it to stay in place looks set to be refused following a number of objections.

Takeaway van Chef Shack has been situated on the intersection between Links Road and Fisher Road in Port Seton for a number of months and a retrospective planning application was submitted to East Lothian Council in May.

A number of complaints about noise levels from the van’s generator and littering issues were reported to East Lothian Council.

However, outraged supporters have taken to social media to back chef Jim Jawor and his Mexican food kiosk.

The food van, which has a strong fanbase of regular customers, operates from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, Thursday to Sunday.

Mr Jawor, who is licensed to trade by East Lothian Council, has been supported by social media users, who are gathering support in a quest to keep the service in Port Seton.

Chef Shack took to Facebook to announce the news.

They said: “We are sorry to share some sad news with our lovely Chef Shack family and friends.

“We had been working with East Lothian Council to make our Chef Shack a regular feature within the Port Seton community and continue to provide our authentic Mexican experience with our fans.

“Due to objections from a couple of local people complaining about the noise from the small generator and litter, which we take away with us, we are unable to return to our much-loved location.

“We are working with East Lothian Council on an appeal and alternative pitch and could really do with your support! We are collating community support through emails to jebrown@baxterstorey.com

“Lots of warm hugs and we will have a Chef Shack party once we’ve found a new home! Adios for now.”

One outraged Facebook user said: “Some folk are just never happy, this is such sad news as this van was amazing and very popular.”

Another added: “I can’t believe people have complained, some people are never happy, definitely appeal this decision and you will have the support of all your customers.”

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “In May 2021, planning permission was retrospectively sought for a mobile snack van that was being sited at the intersection of Links Road and Fisher Road, Port Seton.

“Thirteen objections to the application have been received.

“The intention of the planning service is to refuse planning permission.

“Because of the objections, a report setting out why planning permission should be refused needs to go on our weekly Scheme of Delegation List, which is circulated to all councillors. Councillors then have seven days within which to decide whether they are content with this intended decision or whether they wish the application to be decided by the planning committee.”
