THE Big Hare Trail in North Berwick has got off to an amazing start in its first two weeks, say organisers, with hundreds of people visiting the displays so far.

The trail marks 10 years since Leuchie House respite centre, on the outskirts of the town, became an independent charity.

It is delivered by Wild In Art, which has worked on similar projects across Scotland, such as the Oor Wullie Bucket Trail.

Launched on July 10 and running for 10 weeks, the trail saw several businesses sponsor 10 six-foot hares, which were decorated by artists.

Nine are now positioned in locations around North Berwick, with one in Dirleton.

Lana Bambridge, head of fundraising and communications at Leuchie House, said: “We’re delighted with the response we’ve had from the local community and visitors about The Big Hare Trail.

“It’s been such a pleasure to see the joy and fun that people of all ages are having with the trail and it’s been really rewarding to work together with so many of the local community organisations.”

And the sculptures are not the only hare-related products available, with people able to buy activity packs with bunny ears and reusable cups decorated with the Hare Trail banner every Saturday between 10am and 2pm at the Lodge Grounds, North Berwick.

Raffle tickets are also available to win a stay for 10 people, worth £2,500, at Whitekirk Hill’s luxury Lodges. Tickets are £10 each and can be bought from the Leuchie House website.

All of the money raised from merchandise and raffle tickets goes to the charity.

Supporters are also able to donate to Leuchie House by scanning the QR code on each hare with their smartphones or by visiting the charity’s website.

A ‘meet the artists’ event is being held on August 9 in the Marine Hotel at 11am as part of Fringe by the Sea.

At the end of the trail, all of the hares will be auctioned off, with the money raised also going to Leuchie.

The auction takes place on October 1 at the Marine Hotel as well as online. More details on the auction will be released in the coming weeks but there has already been some interest, with people beginning to register to bid. Those interested in bidding at the auction are asked to email info@thebigharetrail.co.uk
