TWO people cut off by the tide near North Berwick were rescued by the town's lifeboat crew yesterday evening (Saturday).

North Berwick RNLI received a call at 6.49pm to reports of two people in difficulty off South Carr Beacon, Seacliff, east of North Berwick.

An RNLI spokesperson said: "Our volunteers launched and were quickly on scene locating the two casualties, thigh deep in water, on submerged rocks to the south of the beacon.

"The casualties had been cut off by the tide whilst walking out to the beacon.

"North Berwick CRT threw a line to them; however, one managed to swim the gap as the lifeboat manoeuvred through the rocks, the other wasn't keen to face the tidal current, waiting for the lifeboat.

"Always check tide times. Be aware many rocks which dry at low tide may be covered /cut off as the tide rises. Never attempt to swim; deep channels may have strong currents. Find a high and dry rock and call for help.

"In any coastal emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
