CONCERNS that the manner in which cars travel over speed bumps in Tranent could result in a serious accident have been raised by Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council.
During last month’s meeting, chairman David Forrest discussed his experience of driving on Muirpark Terrace, near the town’s Aldi store.
He said: “If you drive at Aldi across from Muirpark to Ormiston Road, they’ve got a single speed bump in the middle of the road and a number of times I’ve had to brake hard because of people driving in the middle of the road; it seems that everywhere else has two speed bumps rather than one in the middle.
“And for the amount of traffic that is now travelling on that road, I don’t think those speed bumps are adequate.
“There’s going to be an accident there because people just try and straddle them, they drive in the middle of the road.
“People come round the corners driving in the middle of the road, simply because a car can easily straddle the one bump.”
Fellow member and community council vice-chairman Mike Falconer said he had encountered a similar issue, calling it “quite scary”.
Simon Davie, Fa’side Area Partnership area manager, said that buses also had problems on the road.
Mr Forrest added: “I don’t know if there is any intention to look at that with the volume of traffic that’s using that road and the potential increase from all the Walker Homes in the not-too-distant future.”
Both Mr Forrest and Mr Falconer agreed that the speed bumps did not slow traffic down and were a hazard more than a help.
Mr Davie agreed to look into the issue and report back to the community council at its next meeting.
An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of concerns realised via the community council which we will follow up but these measures are in place as this is a 20mph limited area.”
