EAST Lothian residents are in the top 10 when it comes to paying the highest proportion of council tax in Scotland.

The average annual pay in the county is £31,084, with the average council tax per dwelling £1,385 – fifth most in Scotland and the sixth highest proportion of annual salary.

The figures were revealed after it was announced that all of Scotland’s 32 local councils had agreed to freeze council tax at last year’s levels .

According to new research, home values are 30 years out of date, with most low to middle-income families paying the most as a proportion of their income.

The national average for Scotland was found to be £1,195 per dwelling, with the average salary at £29,980 – making the average council tax payment four per cent of residents’ annual pay, the lowest figure in Britain.

In East Lothian, the percentage of annual pay sits at 4.46 per cent.

The highest average council tax in Scotland was East Renfrewshire at £1,573.
