A TRANENT man will be sentenced next month after not appearing in court last week.

David Thomson, of Young Avenue, was due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last Wednesday for sentencing.

Thomson, 38, had previously pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner by striking her to the head at an address on the town’s Carlaverock Avenue on November 21 last year.

But solicitor Richard Soutar told the court that his client had been in hospital recently and, though he had been released, he was “not able to come to court today”.

Mr Soutar added that the incident had been “an isolated one” and had taken place while his client had been involved in “a feisty relationship” with the woman.

Sheriff Adrian Fraser decided against issuing a non-appearance warrant and deferred sentence again to next month for an additional social work report to be prepared.

The sheriff said he would be considering imposing a non-harassment order at the sentencing hearing.
