THE easing of lockdown restrictions and East Lothian’s movement into Level 2 last month enabled North Berwick Rowing Club’s adult members to return to the water for the first time this year, despite its annual regatta being put on hold.

With coastal rowing considered a contact sport, the adult members had to wait to get back out for exercise, sightseeing and socialising.

Younger members had already been rowing for a few weeks, with new members of all ages also being recruited.

With the fourth Skiffie World Championships due to take place in Holland next summer, recruiting and training youngsters to represent the club is a priority.

Jacque Turner, club convener, said: “The youngsters are so enthusiastic and committed. I think we can see world champions in the making here. We hope we can persuade more of their friends to join in, too.”

Duncan Mackay, club captain, said: “We are delighted to get back out to do what we love.

“A big disappointment for rowers is that competition, particularly in regattas at other clubs, have been largely cancelled or postponed this year.

“Our regatta in August is on hold at present but with the easing of restrictions we are hopeful we can run some type of event for visitors.”
