THE number of positive cases of coronavirus in East Lothian has continued to rise sharply and has increased for the twelfth day in a row to almost 100 in the first week of the month.

According to Public Health Scotland, East Lothian recorded 99 cases of Covid-19 between June 1 and 7, a significant number of which are in Dunbar. Between May 31 and June 6, 79 cases had been recorded.

This latest data gives the county a seven-day positive rate per 100,000 population of 92.4 and a test positivity rate of 2.7 per cent.

East Lothian's coronavirus figures were last this high between February 22-28 when the number of positive cases recorded was 101 and the seven-day positive rate per 100,000 population was 94.3.

Dunbar has witnessed a sharp spike in figures. Out of the 99 recorded in the county for the week to June 6, 37 were in the town.

Sixteen were in in Dunbar East (giving a seven-day positive rate per 100,000 population of 343.3) and 21 in Dunbar West (a seven-day positive rate of 383.6).

Wallyford and Whitecraig recorded 17 cases during the same seven-day period; Musselburgh North nine; and Musselburgh East six. There were four in East Linton and Rural and three in each of Musselburgh South; Pinkie Braes; Ormiston; Haddington South and Prestonpans West.

Regarding vaccinations in the county, up till yesterday (Wednesday) 71,496 residents over the age of 18 had received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine - 83.9 per cent of the population.

The number of residents who have received two doses stands at 48,151 - 56.5 per cent of the population.

All residents over the age of 55 have received at least one dose of a vaccine, says health chiefs, while  all over 70 have received two.

The number of 50-54 year olds having received one dose currently stands at 95.3 per cent; 86.8 per cent for those 40-49; 78.6 per cent for 30-39 year olds and 27.5 per cent of 18-29 year olds.
