A FITNESS instructor aims to use her first indoor class at Wallyford following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions to help children living in poverty.

Shirley Johnstone, who was brought up in the village, is donating funds from the session to Forth 1’s ‘Cash for Kids’ 5k a Day challenge.

The charity initiative seeks to improve the lives of disadvantaged youngsters across the Lothians, Fife and Falkirk who are affected by poverty, illness, neglect or have additional needs.

Shirley, a former pupil of Wallyford Primary and Musselburgh Grammar Schools who moved to Prestonpans 37 years ago after she got married, has returned to her home village to lead dance routines on mini trampolines at Wallyford Miners Club.

The first class takes place on May 19, from 6pm to 6.45pm, when 15 trampolines will be available.

Classes outside the Gothenburg in Prestonpans on Monday evenings will resume indoors on Monday, May 24, from 7.30pm to 8.15pm.

Shirley is also taking part in the 5k a Day challenge herself.

She said: “It is great to be focusing on 5k a Day, to give me motivation to keep going.”

Participants in the challenge are asked to complete 5k of exercise every day for 21 consecutive days by running, cycling or walking.
