WOODEN cabins which brought festive cheer to Haddington could be used this summer too.

Five cabins, selling various wares, were dotted around Haddington town centre in the lead-up to Christmas last year.

Now, Haddington Business Community Partnership (HBCP) has confirmed it is keen for the cabins to return as part of a summer market.

Paul Kinnoch, of the Tyneside Tavern, is among those at the heart of the proposals.

He said: “We would like to look at some more manageable markets throughout the year.

“More than likely, the first one would be a summer one.

“The proposal was made to have spring, summer, autumn and a Christmas one like before.

“Obviously, time has caught up on us for the spring event and guidelines are still in place too but the focus is on a summer one.”

The cabins were put in place through HBCP working alongside East Lothian Council’s town centre recovery group. Stallholders at the wooden cabins, which were on Court Street and neighbouring Lodge Street and High Street, sold gifts ranging from jewellery and soap to beer and pies.

At the same time, notices were in place not only thanking people for shopping at the cabins but also encouraging them to visit local traders in the town.

It is expected the cabins will be again used in the town centre, although they could be more spread out for any future markets.

Mr Kinnoch said: “They were very successful for the short period of time we had to put them together, do some decorating and get it advertised.

“A lot of people came back and said they would like to see them again and it was nice to see something going on over the festive period.

“They are not forgotten about.”

The cabins, which are currently in storage, can also be hired by community groups for various events.
