QUESTIONS have been raised regarding the future of Haddington’s current Aldi store.

The supermarket chain is due to move from Whittingehame Drive to a new store at Gateside Retail Park, on the town’s western edge, by the end of September.

Building work is under way at the new retail park, which will also have as tenants The Food Warehouse, part of the Iceland family, and Costa Coffee.

However, questions surround the future of the town centre site, where Aldi has been based for more than a decade.

The issue was raised at Haddington’s community council meeting last month by group member Jack Worden.

Last year, Aldi, which also has stores in Musselburgh, Tranent and North Berwick, confirmed that a purchaser for the site had been identified but the intended use was not publicly known.

Ward councillor John McMillan, who lives in the town, confirmed “nothing” had come before the economic development team in East Lothian Council.

Aldi previously announced that the new Haddington store would open in the second half of this year.

The new store will be 50 per cent larger than the existing premises.
