THE fire service were called to Stenton Primary School earlier today (Thursday) to extinguish a fire that had took hold within the building.

The fire service were able to contain the fire within one of the school’s classrooms but there has been some damage to the internal fabric of the building as well as smoke damage.

A fuller inspection of the damage will be carried out tomorrow (Friday).

It is hoped that the majority of the remedial repairs will commence during the remainder of the Easter holidays so that all pupils can return as planned on April 20.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council added: “More updates will be issued as appropriate.”

It is not known what caused the fire at this stage.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted by the Courier for comment.
