A PRIMARY school was targeted by vandals on a nightly basis during the February school break.

Bottles were smashed around the playground at Cockenzie Primary School, while damage was also caused to property.

Police said incidents of anti-social behaviour and vandalism were taking place on “a nightly basis”.

A garden area, which is maintained by the children, has also been destroyed.

Police Sergeant Wardell, community sergeant for Musselburgh, Prestonpans and Tranent, said: “This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and as such officers, along with our colleagues in the council’s anti-social behaviour team, will be carrying out patrols of the area and anyone found to be responsible for these crimes will be dealt with accordingly.”

Police have asked parents to consider where their children are when not at home.

Ward councillor Lachlan Bruce said: “We are still in lockdown so people shouldn’t be going out unless it is 100 per cent necessary; and destroying a garden maintained by children isn’t necessary at any time, never mind during a pandemic. This is an ongoing problem so I will be getting in contact again with council officers to see what we can do to stop the issues.”

A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council said: “We are all saddened by the damage that has been caused at Cockenzie Primary School. The playground area is much used, especially in current times when access to outdoor space for playing and learning is so important.”
