WORK to extend one of East Lothian’s newest primary schools could get under way later this year.

Additional capacity for youngsters attending nursery could be created at Windygoul Primary School in Tranent.

The scheme, which is being proposed and considered by East Lothian Council, would see two new nursery rooms created, as well as additional toilets.

A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council outlined the plans for the school, which opened in 2007.

She said: “The extension to Windygoul Primary School is needed to meet increased demand for nursery spaces and offer expanded provision under 1,140 hours. The new space will increase capacity from 70 to a potential 120 early learning and childcare places within the school.”

The works will also include changes to the outside of the school, which is on the town’s Brotherstone’s Way.

The council spokeswoman told the Courier: “The works also include a redesigned playground area with new play equipment, and covered outdoor space for rainy days.

“The work is expected to begin in autumn 2021 and anticipated completion in summer 2022.”

No cost for the potential extension has been revealed, with further details likely to emerge as the procurement process gets under way.

If approved, it is likely to be the first of two extensions to the primary school in the coming years.

A further extension is expected as the school roll increases, with more than 500 new homes planned for south of the school, with the primary school to expand accordingly. Construction work has already started on the new homes.

East Lothian Council gave the go-ahead to planning permission in principle for the housing development in December 2019.

At that time, space was left for any potential extension of the school, as well as a neighbouring kick pitch.
