GROUPS of youths have been "partying into the early hours of the morning" at an historic Musselburgh estate, police have said.

The partying vandals caused “destruction” at historic Newhailes Estate at Musselburgh at the weekend.

Disused storage buildings in the old flower garden, which is closed off and secured, have been “considerably damaged”, with whole roofs caved in and event props destroyed.

Newhailes, which is run by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS), has notices asking for these areas not to be entered as they are “unsafe.”

PC Kevin Hughes, from the Musselburgh Community Policing Team, said: “We have been made aware of a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour in the grounds of the Newhailes Estate in the past month.

“This includes individuals entering and vandalising derelict buildings on the site, as well as groups of youths gathering in the wooded areas nearby and partying until the early hours of the morning.

“Not only are these activities leading to further damage and excessive littering, which spoil the area, but they are also causing great concern to the local community.

“We have been conducting patrols in the area and will continue to do so, as we make enquiries into these recent incidents.

“Anyone with information can contact police on 101 and ask for the Musselburgh Community Policing Team.”
