BOMB disposal experts were called out to a stretch of beach near Muirfield golf course on Friday afternoon after an unexploded mortar round was found.

A member of the public alerted police after spotting what appeared to be “unexploded ordinance” near the beach at Gullane.

A spokesman for Police Scotland told the Courier that the call came in at about 2.30pm.

He said: “Police officers cordoned the area off and awaited the arrival of bomb disposal, who, upon arrival, confirmed that it was an inert two-inch mortar round, which they disposed of.

“At no time were any members of the public at risk.”
