A BUSY schedule of roadworks will see three sections of the A1 closed this week for repairs to potholes.

From this evening (Thursday) at 8pm until 6am tomorrow (Friday), the westbound (northbound) carriageway between Wallyford and Old Craighall will be completely closed.

A diversion is in place via the A6094 and Salters Road, through Whitecraig, and A68 to Millerhill Roundabout. This will take drivers back onto the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass.

Then from 8pm tomorrow until 6am on Saturday, the westbound (northbound) Bowerhouse off-slip on the A1, between the Spott and Thistly Cross Roundabouts at Dunbar, will be closed.

Diversion is via the A1 to the Thistly Cross Roundabout and the B6370 to the village of Pitcox, turning left to continue to the Bowerhouse junction.

On the same day, the westbound (northbound) section of the A1 between the Thistly Cross Roundabout at Dunbar and Abbotsview junction at Haddington will also be closed.

Diversion for this closure is via the A199, with people able to join the A1 at Abbotsview.

The works are being carried out by BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s operating company.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government guidance, are in place to protect workers and ensure they remain safe on site.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s south east network manager, said: “This has been the coldest January in 10 years, and adverse winter weather – particularly the freeze/thaw cycle – can have a serious impact on road surfaces.

“Our teams work to repair the worst affected areas as quickly as possible.

“Weekly safety inspections are carried out on all trunk roads to identify any defects requiring immediate attention. ‘Category one’ defects, such as deep potholes which could present a danger, are recorded, temporarily repaired and then permanently repaired within 28 days.”

Alongside these closures, parts of the M8 and M9 are closed for similar works.
