EAST Lothian’s seven-day positive Covid-19 infection rate per 100,000 of the population remains less than 100 for the second day in a row but the county's death rate from the pandemic continues to increase.

The latest data from Public Health Scotland, released today (Tuesday), shows that the county’s case figures remained static but the number of deaths has once again went up.

So what are the latest coronavirus figures for East Lothian after the weekend and where do they stand in comparison to the rest of Scotland?

Here is the latest data explained:

Cases

The latest data shows that, between January 17 and 23, there were 104 cases and a seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population of 97.1.

Deaths

Two further deaths from Covid-19 have been recorded in East Lothian.

The data released yesterday showed that one death was recorded on January 21.

It has now been confirmed there was in fact two deaths with an additional death recorded on January 22.

This is in addition to two deaths on January 16 and one on each January 4, 6, 13, 14, 17 and 18.

This brings East Lothian’s death toll for the month and year so far to 11.

By comparison, five deaths were recorded in East Lothian in the whole month of December.

The is the highest monthly death toll in East Lothian since the first wave of the pandemic last spring.

How do the latest figures compare?

East Lothian’s Covid-19 infection rate remain the lowest in the Lothian health board area and is one of only six local authorities in Scotland with a seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population less than 100.

Edinburgh’s seven-day positive rate per 100,000 is 106.7, Midlothian’s 129.8 and West Lothian’s at 134.9.

When compared to the rest of Scotland, East Lothian’s figures are now the sixth lowest in Scotland.

 

Areas of concern

Four locations in East Lothian are classed as areas of concern, all recording a seven-day positive rate between 200 and 399. They are:

  • Cockenzie (12 cases)
  • Musselburgh North (11 cases)
  • Pinkie Braes (five cases)
  • Tranent South (13 cases)

Six places recorded a seven-day positive rate between 100 and 199, down three from Friday. This list now includes:

  • Longniddry and Aberlady (six cases)
  • Musselburgh East (six cases)
  • Musselburgh West (three cases)
  • North Berwick South (six cases)
  • Ormiston (five cases)
  • Tranent North (eight cases)

At the other end of the scale, seven places recorded fewer than two cases each, two fewer than yesterday. On this list is:

  • Dunbar East
  • Dunbar West
  • Gullane and Drem
  • Haddington North
  • Haddington South
  • Prestonpans East
  • North Berwick North

The rest of the county (East Linton and Rural, Haddington Rural, Prestonpans West, Musselburgh South and Wallyford/Whitecraig) recorded a seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population either between 50 and 99 or one and 49.

Scotland’s latest figures

Across Scotland today, a total of 1,049 positive cases of the virus were recorded, representing nine per cent of all tests carried out yesterday.

A total of 2,010 people are currently in hospital, six fewer than yesterday, and 149 are in intensive care, two fewer than yesterday.

Sadly, a further 87 deaths were recorded among those who had previously tested positive.

A total of 437,900 people have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, up 22,498 in the past 24 hours, and 6,060 people have received their second dose, an increase of 522 in the same time.

This news comes on the same day that the UK announced it has recorded more than 100,000 coronavirus deaths.
