RESIDENTS of a nursing home in North Berwick walked laps of the home’s garden and in turn donated more than £5,000 to charity to help those who have suffered strokes.

The residents of Fidra Nursing Home walked the laps last summer.

Staff also joined in the challenge and racked up the kilometres on foot; residents matched every kilometre with a lap of the garden.

They were raising money for Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland and North Berwick Stroke Club, donating £5,035.86 in total.

They were led by Fidra resident and stroke survivor Donald Skinner, who organised the challenge.

The 87-year-old, originally from Edinburgh, suffered a stroke in 2017.

Donald’s hard work and determination has allowed him to make a good recovery.

Donald and some of Fidra’s other residents attend North Berwick Stroke Club, which is affiliated to Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland.

Donald said: “Before lockdown, I was attending the club on a weekly basis and I really enjoyed that. It is great to get together with people who understand how you are feeling and have had similar experiences.

“I miss seeing them all as we are unable to meet right now. I hope that we can all get together again soon.”

Cat Wilson, on behalf of Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, said: “We were thrilled to receive the final total from Fidra Nursing Home.

“It has been a huge team effort and we would like to thank Donald and all the residents and staff for their hard work and efforts in raising this incredible amount.

“Donald and the residents have been an inspiration and have been a wonderful example of no life half lived.”
