US INDIE rock superstar Phoebe Bridgers shot the music video for her single Savior Complex at East Lothian’s Yellowcraig Beach after director Phoebe Waller-Bridge “fell in love” with the area.

Bridgers, who has been nominated for four 2021 Grammy Awards, travelled to the UK last August to film the video, which also stars Normal People actor Paul Mescal.

The black-and-white video features a bloodied and bruised Mescal being tailed by a Chihuahua named Charlotte and Bridgers herself, who is seen in one scene driving a tractor.

It begins at Yellowcraig beach – with Fidra island clearly seen. The video, released last month, already has more than 420,000 views on YouTube.

Bridgers, 26, said of the experience: “I’ve only ever shot music videos in LA before, so this is definitely a change of scenery.

“I did have to learn how to drive on the other side of the road. I drove a rental car around.”

Simon Mallinson, of Glasgow-based production company MTP, which filmed the video, told the Courier: “Both the Phoebes were great – it was a Phoebe fest!

“[Bridgers] was everything she was supposed to be. Sometimes celebrities aren’t but she was fantastic. Our producer, James Heath, said she was a very special, talented person and a pleasure to work with.”

The team was briefed by director Waller-Bridge, creator, writer and star of Fleabag and head writer and executive producer of hit TV series Killing Eve, to find a “windy, dramatic, empty beach”.

Simon said: “We ended up shooting on [Yellowcraig] because Waller-Bridge fell in love with the beach and thought it was amazing. She was offered a range and that was the one she loved most.”

Other scenes in the video were shot in Ayrshire.

Simon said: “A producer would have probably picked a beach closer to the other locations but that was the beach the director wanted. And we couldn’t say no to her!”

Savior Complex is from Bridgers’ album Punisher, which has been nominated for best alternative music album at the 2021 Grammy Awards.
