RENT and council tax rises will be cut under budget plans due to go before East Lothian councillors tomorrow (Tuesday).

The council's Labour administration is proposing a three per cent increase on council tax this year, compared to nearly five per cent last year.

And rents in the county will go up by just two per cent - less than half the rise previously approved.

The decision to keep rent increases low comes after a year in which many families will have been affected by the pandemic.

Councillor Norman Hampshire acknowledged it had been a tough year for many East Lothian residents.

He said: "People have been furloughed and on low wages and are worried about what is ahead. This will be a help to them."

The draft budget proposal will go before the Labour administration's cabinet tomorrow for approval before going out to the full council for discussion.
