A NORTH Berwick High School teacher who won an award from the German Embassy has been recognised in Parliament.

Modern languages teacher Suzanne Ritchie was awarded German Teacher of the Year from the embassy in London.

Now, East Lothian MP Kenny MacAskill has praised Miss Ritchie and issued an Early Day Motion in recognition of her achievements.

Miss Ritchie’s award acknowledged her “outstanding dedication and tireless support of the teaching of the German language” and noted her “desire to give her pupils a sense of wonder in the teaching of languages”.

Mr MacAskill said: “I was delighted to put down this motion recognising Miss Ritchie’s achievement.

“The teaching of modern languages is extremely important to our young people who are living in an increasingly international world.

“To have a teacher in East Lothian so dedicated to that belief that languages expands boundaries and opens up opportunity is invaluable to North Berwick students. Miss Ritchie is a credit to East Lothian.”

The full motion reads: “That this House congratulates Suzanne Ritchie, a modern languages teacher from North Berwick High School on winning the German Teacher of the Year award from the German Embassy; acknowledges the embassy’s recognition of her outstanding dedication and tireless support of the teaching of the German language; notes her desire to give her pupils a sense of wonder in the teaching of languages; and echoes deputy head of culture and education at the German Embassy Dr Susanne Frane’s recognition of Miss Ritchie’s impressive commitment inside and outside of [her] classroom every day.”
