ON BOXING Day, East Lothian, along with much of Scotland, entered Level 4 of the Scottish Government coronavirus local protection levels.

This places significant restrictions upon us all at a time when we want to be with our families, enjoying the festivities.

At this time of year, we normally see a spike in reports of domestic abuse and I anticipate that the additional restrictions placed upon us will increase these reports, so I wanted to provide some support and advice, not just to victims but also to those who suspect it is taking place.

If you are experiencing domestic abuse or know someone who is, report it.

You can do this through a variety of ways, including online to ourselves at the Police Scotland website or on our 101 line; however, always dial 999 if it is an emergency. You can also report domestic abuse or seek support through other agencies – the National Domestic Abuse Helpline is available 24 hours a day on 0800 027 1234 and locally we have Woman’s Aid East Lothian on 0131 561 5800. There is also the Men’s Advice Line on 0808 801 0327.

Domestic abuse is a pattern of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and/or violent behaviour, including sexual violence, by a partner or ex-partner.

Domestic abuse is overwhelmingly experienced by women and perpetrated by men.

It doesn’t matter how old someone is, what race or ethnicity they are, what class they are, whether or not they are disabled, or whether they have children – anyone can be a victim of abuse.

Domestic abuse is never the fault of the victim and it is never OK, no matter what the circumstances – please make that call.

Every morning, I review every domestic incident that is reported in East Lothian with my teams in the domestic abuse unit, Public Protection Unit and CID. This is our main focus and priority every day, to protect victims and bring perpetrators to justice.

That is why I have placed a much greater emphasis on violence in the homes this Christmas and to protect those most in need.

Please enjoy the festivities responsibly and enjoy your time with your loved ones, but do not suffer in silence – there is help out there and please make that call.
