I AM DELIGHTED with the announcement that if the SNP Government is re-elected in May, it will commit to free school breakfast and lunches for all primary school children throughout the year. Children deserve to have an upbringing where they don’t have to go hungry, and I believe that free primary school meals are an important step forward in tackling child poverty.

This is not just an issue for the poorest in our society – many families have to make difficult decisions about how to afford to feed their children. With more children in the UK being forced into poverty under Tory welfare cuts, it is more important than ever that we ensure children have access to a healthy meal and are not forced to starve. Children will be fuelled to learn better at school, as it is harder to focus on an empty stomach, and we will be setting up a generation of young thinkers who are supported to reach their full potential. I’m proud to represent a party which is taking bold steps to tackle child poverty.

The Warmer Homes Scotland scheme provides a service to help make homes warmer and more comfortable. Assistance can include installing new and efficient boilers, fitting new radiators, insulating lofts or installing gas mains to make heating homes in hard-to-reach areas more affordable. Fuel poverty is a harsh reality for many but help is available to make your home warmer, happier and healthier this winter. Check if you’re eligible to receive help to heat your home by phoning Home Energy Scotland on 0808 808 2282.

I enjoyed a visit to Musselburgh Racecourse to see the measures they had put in place to keep all those visiting safe from the risks presented by coronavirus. It was very encouraging to see what local businesses can achieve under the Government guidance and I was impressed by the steps they had taken. I am always happy to hear from local businesses and to make visits – if you’re a business owner looking for support, feel free to contact me.
