STUDENTS in Glasgow are being invited to get tested for coronavirus at a city centre testing facility ahead of travelling home for Christmas.

Glasgow Caledonian University will launch its testing centre for asymptomatic students from Mondy and it will remain open until December 12.

Two free tests will be offered to students from GCU, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow Kelvin College and City of Glasgow College wishing to travel home this winter break.

Tests are to be taken three days apart and it is hoped it will break the chain of transmission of the virus.

The latest testing site will be located in the university's CEE building and will operate separately to the Covid-19 testing centre which opened on the campus earlier this year.

A UK-Government testing facility has been running from the Universities sports centre the ARC since September.

Students can expect test results within 24-hours or sooner since the Lateral Flow Tests do not require laboratory processing.

GCU's principal, Professor Pamela Gillies CBE FRSE, said: “After a year like no other, I think it’s really important for students to be able to travel home to their families and loved ones this Christmas.

"Their safety, and that of their families is paramount

"The setting up of the facility in such a short period has been a real challenge, but I’ve no doubt that by us all working together, supporting each other, and doing what we can to support the nation’s emergency response, we will be able to overcome the challenges we face and emerge stronger.”

Students are urged to book their tests online and to get tested at the earliest opportunity.

Dr Sheila Lodge, Depute Principal of City of Glasgow College, said: “The health and safety of our students is our priority, and this is a reassuring initiative for our students and their families, providing another layer of protection against the transmission of COVID-19, and assisting the Scottish Government and health authorities in their determination to suppress the virus.”
