POLICE are hunting “despicable” thieves who broke into an East Lothian church.

The thieves smashed a window and climbed into Tranent Parish Church in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It is believed that the thieves managed to get away with video recording equipment belonging to the church.

A post on the church’s Facebook page revealed that its Sunday service was still able to go ahead as planned and was recorded for its parishioners to enjoy on social media.

The post read: “Unfortunately, it seems that the church has been broken into last night.

“Thankfully, nothing of great value has been stolen and no major damage caused. The service was still recorded and will hopefully be posted later today.

“The police have been informed and a huge thanks to all our office bearers who were at the church today to assist.

“The church is disappointed and saddened that this happened, and stress that anyone in real financial need just needs to ask for help, as there are numerous community groups in Tranent who can offer assistance or contact others that can provide this.”

And the Presbytery Reader Jacqueline Waugh spoke of the break-in during the church service on Sunday morning.

She said: “I am very sorry to hear of the break-in last night as it is never easy to hear about things like that.

“It is a horrible feeling to know that someone has been in and taken something that does not belong to them.

“I only hope it’s because they really needed it rather than just being bad.

"If it is because they really needed it then we will pray for them and I am just so sorry to hear that it has happened.”

Locals have now slammed the thieves after news of the break-in circulated in the town.

One posted: “Sad state of affairs when someone can sink so low to break into the church. Hope there isn’t too much damage.”

Another said: “So sad but what a lovely response to a very difficult circumstance. I hope it wasn’t just needless vandalism and if someone does require support they will get in touch.”

And a third added: “So sorry to hear about this. Despicable thing to do to breaking into a church.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police have been notified of a break-in at Tranent Parish Church between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

“Enquiries are currently ongoing and anyone with information should contact Dalkeith Police Station and quote reference number 1042 of Sunday, November 22.”
