HALLOWE’EN might have been a bit quieter this year but its magic was kept alive by one North Berwick resident, whose handmade fairy houses had children out searching for sprites.

Mel Chambers, who lives on the town’s Glen Ora estate, began making a fairy garden during lockdown to entertain the children who could not use local parks.

The houses proved so popular she began making them to sell – and she has now had customers from as far afield as Toronto and Colorado.

East Lothian Courier:

Mel said: “I began making a fairy garden during lockdown as a focal point for the kids.

“When the swing parks closed, they delighted in searching for the fairies – which always seemed to have flown off just as they arrived! Everyone complimented me on my garden and fairy houses and suggested I sell them online.

“I use beautiful beach pebbles from North Berwick and pretty lichen twigs from the woods to create tiny homes. I find sea-smooth slate to use for the roof and sea glass charms bring extra magic.

“Each home has a unique opening door that reveals a tiny fairy teacup or cooking pot.”

A special Hallowe’en giveaway saw Mel leave tickets round North Berwick Law, the beach and her fairy garden with instructions on how to enter a prize draw to win one of her magical houses.

She said: “I was super excited when people began to enter either by text, Instagram or Etsy.

“The winner was drawn at random.”

The winning entry was by 11-year-old Charlie, from Edinburgh.
