A FOOTBALL fundraiser hit the back of the net and collected more than £1,000 for Dunbar United.

Income for the East of Scotland Football League Premier Division club has been hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with fans unable to come through the turnstiles and cheer on their team.

However, their coffers have received a boost thanks to a tombola in a High Street shop, which, alongside a home baking sale, collected £1,001.

Harry McCulloch, from the club’s matchday committee, said: “Because of the current situation, we are trying to raise any kind of money for the club.

“James Smith, from McColl’s, said he was going to hold a tombola.

“He managed to raise over £1,000 by just having that in the shop.

“It was all the locals and supporters going up and a few of them donated prizes as well.”

Prizes on offer included bottles of alcohol, glasses, an Amazon Echo Dot and club face coverings.

Mr McCulloch, who got involved with the club earlier this summer, was delighted with the response and thanked members of the public for their support.

A cheque was handed over to the club last month.
