CASES of coronavirus have been reported at two village primary schools in East Lothian and are the first outside a main town.

Both Wallyford and Pencaitland Primary Schools confirmed single cases last week.

It has been confirmed by NHS Lothian’s health protection team that the case at Pencaitland Primary School had not been at school while they were infectious, this is not the case for Wallyford.

Those who were confirmed as being a close contact with either case have been contacted and will be isolating at home for 14 days.

Schools across East Lothian are currently closed until next Tuesday (October 27) for the October half term break but both schools continue to operate and remain open as normal.

Those who have not been contacted and remain well should continue to attend school as normal.

So far, cases of Covid-19 within schools in East Lothian have only been reported in the county’s main towns, these two mark the first at a village school.

Positive cases have also been confirmed at Ross High, Musselburgh Grammar, North Berwick High, Knox Academy and Preston Lodge High Schools as well as Haddington and Preston Tower Primary Schools and St Mary’s Nursery in Haddington.

Children who develop symptoms of coronavirus, which include a new continuous cough, high temperature and loss or change in taste or smell, are told to not come to school, self isolate and get tested.

All other household members must also stay at home until the result is received and follow the necessary advice.
