A PAIR of avid gardeners celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with a family trip to Kilconquhar Castle, Fife.

Andrew and Jessie Davie, of Prestongrange Terrace, Prestonpans, toasted 60 years of marriage on September 10, and had a small service at Our Lady of Loretto and St Michael Catholic Church, Musselburgh, followed by the trip away, just before lockdown restrictions were tightened.

The couple, who have six children, 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, met at St Gabriel’s Church ‘mixed youth’ services and have lived in Prestonpans all their lives.

Before retirement, Jessie, 82, was a shop assistant at C&A clothing store, while Andrew, 87, was in the army, then worked with McVitie’s Biscuits before setting up his own catering business.

Daughter Ruth said the secret to their success was “their family, their gardening and their friends”.

She added: “They’re really into gardening; they grow a lot of their own.

“They grow potatoes and seed their own vegetables and they love flowers; that keeps them quite active.

“Mum’s still really active – she plays badminton, she walks everywhere, she swims once a week. Dad’s really active in Prestonpans Royal British Legion.”

Ruth said the busy couple were well known in the community.
