POLICE are hunting a masked armed robber who confronted a couple as they walked along the River Tyne in Haddington last night.

The couple were approached by a man wearing a black face covering, who asked to use a mobile phone before producing a weapon and robbing them.

Officers said the incident happened shortly after 9.50pm near St Mary's Parish Church and the Tynehouse Kitchen with the man, who is described as white and around 30 years old, fleeing in the direction of Nungate Bridge after his female victim ran to contact the police.

The robber was wearing black trousers and a black jacket or hoodie with the hood up as well as the face covering.

Police said initial enquiries suggested the suspect may have been seen in the Waterside area at around 10.25pm, walking in the direction of Giffordgate and Ford Road.

Detective Constable Steven Stewart, from Dalkeith CID, said: "We’re appealing for anyone who was in the area and may have seen the man in question to please get in touch.
