YOUNG rugby players have given cycling ‘a try’ to raise more than £1,000.

With no games on the horizon and in need of a change of scenery from Neilson Park, Haddington Rugby Club’s P5 mini team decided to undertake a different challenge.

An informal ‘team bonding’ bike ride to Longniddry and back was planned and quickly became a sponsored cycle.

The route taken was down the old railway line to Longniddry and back, 10 miles in all.

Everyone congregated back at Neilson Park for what turned out to be a weary game of touch rugby.

A spokesman for Haddington RFC said: “A total of £ 1,500 was raised, a remarkable amount, and double what was estimated.

“A huge shout out should go to all the friends and family members who generously donated.

“The P5 team run with a healthy pool of 25 players and this little bit of fundraising will help smarten them up no end; the intention being that the funds will be used to buy kit. First up being a set of blue strips which will be used for the dual purpose of training in and for tournament play where the head count permits two teams can enter – a blue and a red team.”
