A NORTH Berwick arts group may not have been able to complete its regular activities during the coronavirus pandemic but now, as Scotland emerges from lockdown, it is trying to keep people entertained with step-by-step art videos.

PARTicipate has been posting on its Facebook page videos which show its followers how to make ambitious artworks using materials or inspiration they have to hand in their homes, such as pebbles, cardboard and basic paints.

Its first video, called ‘Light Relief’ and inspired by the abstract work of Ben Nicholson, gained hundreds of views.

The demonstration, by local artist Jayne Stokes, is one of the group’s most popular posts in the last two years.

PARTicipate has also been hosting a virtual art gallery, posting pictures and images on its Facebook and Instagram pages of artwork by both East Lothian artists and supporters of pARTicipate.

Geraldine Prince, the group’s co-ordinator, asked artists, both amateur and professional, to consider contributing work to the virtual gallery, with images then flooding in from across the UK.

Among those featured were Dominique Cameron and Ann Cowan, whose work was recently shown at the Fidra art gallery in Gullane.

One artist who sent in images of their work was Senada Borcilo, who is originally from Bosnia but came to Scotland as a refugee and now lives in East Linton.

She drew sensitive and intimate iPad drawings of her husband during lockdown, and also drew images of her grandmother.

Senada is involved in the East Linton art exhibition.

North Berwick Community Council chairman Judy Lockhart, who volunteered as part of the town’s resilience team during lockdown, supported pARTicipate’s virtual gallery by helping with social media posts and being its guest editor.

Judy also took over pARTicipate’s Instagram page during the later stages of lockdown, where she shared some of her favourite images alongside inspirational messages that also encouraged people to stay safe while out and about.
