A GOLFER who carded his first hole-in-one in a half-century of playing the game could not believe it when he claimed another ‘ace’ three weeks later. . . at the same hole!

They say good things come in threes and that has definitely been the case for Paul Anderson.

He claimed his first hole-in-ones at the par-three ninth hole on Gullane Golf Club’s No. 1 course – while he has also welcomed his second grandchild, Harris Ronnie Paul Anderson, into the world.

The account manager, who has been playing golf since he was a youngster, said: “I have waited 50 years to get one and then I get two in three weeks!

“The first was on August 31, which was the same day as my second grandson was born as well – that was a costly day!

“Then, I scored a hole in one on Monday and that was my grandson three weeks old.

“Whenever he has got a celebration of any kind, I must be doing something good.”

Mr Anderson, of West Fenton Gait, Gullane, has been a member at Gullane Golf Club for more than 20 years.

He was taking on Stephen Lindsey in the Dirleton Castle Club Championships when he made his own little piece of history.

Mr Anderson said: “The pin was on the front left and I used a pitching wedge.

“You could not see because of the way of the hill and we did not find it was in the hole until we got to the green but we knew it was close.

“The front left position is a difficult position to get anywhere near close to. You start looking at the back of the green and there is a dip and I thought it had run right through the back. It is quite downhill and I checked and it was not there.

“I casually walked up to the hole and was never really thinking it was in and then, bang, there it was.”

The father-of-three made the impressive shot at about 5.15pm, just hours after finding out he had become a grandfather for the second time.

However, his good luck was not finished yet, as he returned to the course on Monday alongside his wife Shirley, his sister Heather Murray, and friend Colin Sinclair.

The 61-year-old said: “We were right back on the proper tees and into a bit of a breeze.

“I used a solidly hit four-iron, which is a wee bit different to a pitching wedge, and it was just there.

“I was looking for it to be near the pin, which was in the middle left, and you need to be up the left side.

“It looked very good all the way and I thought I maybe had a good chance of getting a two out of it.”

However, on approaching the green, he was again met with the best possible result.

He added: “I’m wondering where the third one is going to come from!”

Following his success, Gullane Golf Club said on Twitter: “Having achieved his first ever hole-in-one just a few weeks ago, he’s gone and done it again! And on the very same hole! Congratulations Paul on your second ace at the 9th hole on our No.1 course. An incredible achievement... what are the chances?”
