AN OFFICIAL fireworks display will not take place in Haddington this year as organisers had to cancel the event.

East Lothian Council asked communities throughout the county to postpone fireworks displays and Christmas lights switch-ons after it shelved Musselburgh’s fireworks display.

The decision was taken amid concerns surrounding social gatherings.

Now, the team behind Haddington’s fireworks display, which takes place off Whittingehame Drive, has confirmed attention will turn to next year.

A spokeswoman said: “Sadly, we are having to cancel this year’s event

“I’m sure you will agree with us that this very difficult decision is the right one at this time.

“Safety is always paramount to our event and we strive to make it a fun and safe place for all our supporters, from volunteers to vendors to all of our audience, and with added worry of Covid-19, we felt it was not worth risking the health of all involved.

“We’ll see you in 2021 – put November 5 in your diary now.”

Meanwhile, the skies above North Berwick will also not be lit up with fireworks this year after East Lothian Yacht Club cancelled this year’s event.

North Berwick’s display is often held on Bonfire Night and is a long-standing tradition in the town.

A spokesperson for the club said: “Safety has to be our primary concern and, with unfortunate news of increased spread of the virus, it is looking unlikely restrictions will be lifted in time to plan the event properly.”
