TWO Musselburgh schoolgirls are celebrating after completing East Lothian Library Service’s summer reading challenge, which saw them read more than 100 books between them.

Over the summer, Evie Martin and her friend Eilidh Cook completed the Silly Squad Summer Reading Challenge.

The challenge, which took place online this year, saw people read books and log them in their online account, where they left a review of the book and were rewarded with stickers and additional content when they reached certain milestones.

Evie, aged six and a primary three pupil at Stoneyhill Primary School, managed to read 50 books while Eilidh, aged five and a primary two pupil at Campie Primary School, read 54.

Both girls, who are avid readers and have their own library cards with Musselburgh Library, are said to have really enjoyed the challenge.

The girls often visited Musselburgh Library before lockdown, with Evie’s mum Linsey saying that staff at the library would also recommend the girls books to read.

She added: “It was quite nice with it being online, it was nice to keep a record and keep track of how many books we were reading.

“The girls really enjoyed it.

“They both love reading and read every night.”

The girls also often swapped books as they live near each other.

The girls were also contacted by Musselburgh Library’s senior librarian Caroline Messer in celebration of their reading achievements and, as well as a certificate, were gifted two books each.

Evie completed the challenge last year, which used physical booklets and saw people enter their local library to get the books stamped, whilst this was Eilidh first year of participation.
